Poll: Should the Government have bid on Padraig Pearse's surrender letter?

The letter was removed from auction after it failed to meet its reserve.

A LETTER OF surrender from Padraig Pearse to the British Army during the 1916 Rising was withdrawn from auction yesterday after it failed to meet its reserve.

The letter went under the hammer with a guide price of between €1 million and €1.5 million, but the final bid was at €770,000 before it was withdrawn.

The letter will now be sold privately to the bidder, who is based overseas.

The Government has come under fire from the letter’s owner and Sinn Féin for not bidding for the letter in order to put it in State ownership.

Its owner has now applied for an export licence and it is likely to leave Ireland.

What do you think: Should the Government have bid on Padraig Pearse’s surrender letter?
